The phone system in France is composed of 10-digit numbers (there are exceptions, esp. for emergency numbers, see below), starting with a 0.

The next digit is either:

· 1-5, denoting an area in France (“1” is for Paris and suburbs);

· 6, denoting a mobile phone;

· 8, denoting a special service (0800 are toll-free numbers, but 0836 may be very expensive numbers).

In order to dial to France, the country code is 33, then dial the French number omitting the initial 0 (i.e., using nine digits)

In order to dial from France abroad: 00 + country code + number.
